What is Yarn?

Yarn is a collaborative wine project crafted by two old friends, Tommy Grimshaw and Alessandro Fraquelli. Tommy is the Head Winemaker at Dorset’s Langham Wine Estate where Yarn is currently produced, whilst Alessandro (Ali) is the Assistant Winemaker at Jim Barry Wines in South Australia. Having been friends for over 15 years, they began their winemaking careers together at Sharpham Vineyard in South Devon in 2017, constantly pushing each other to make the best wines. Now they are working together again on something truly special.

The approach to Yarn is quite simple on paper - take the best fruit, from the best growers each year and craft something beautiful. They limit themselves to a maximum of 1000 bottles per vintage and only work with one grower each year, choosing who to work with based on the growing conditions. In the winery, they press oxidatively, let the base wines ferment spontaneously in neutral oak barrels and work without any filtration or fining agents. This style of winemaking, creates low pressure sparkling wines with low dosage, allowing them to tell the stories of grower, site and vintage. They are spinning these yarns with their winemaking.
